This past Saturday, Stephanie and I were going to try our hand at one of the campgrounds in the White Mountain region of New Hampshire. Due to a rain storm, we ended up having to find a pet friendly inn to stay at instead-as we had Howie and Lulu join us on this particular adventure. We choose a place called Lovett’s Inn, who had a cottage available that evening. We were very thankful for this little find when the rain came crashing down and we were comfy, warm, and dry next to the cottage’s fireplace.
The dinner at the Inn was alright. We shared our entrees of Beef Tenderloin and Roasted Duck in Cranberry Sauce. Actually-we ate most of the duck and brought the beef home for the kids to enjoy. Breakfast the next morning was much better. Stephanie and I shared a Tomato, Egg, and Bacon Omelet and a stack of Raspberry Pancakes.
Sunday morning began looking a bit ominous as the rain clouds still were over head. However, they slowly began to burn off and it ended up being quite a lovely/warm day. We packed up Howie and Lulu and took a left out of the Inn’s drive onto Rt. 18 with no real destination in mind. We ultimately hit Rt. 302 and needed to make the decision to either head towards Vermont or take 302 towards Jackson NH. We choose to head towards Jackson, a favorite spot of ours.
The drive on 302 was beautiful! We passed through Bethlehem, Crawford’s Notch, The White Mountain State Park, and ultimately Jackson. Along the way, we stopped at scenic overlooks and toured random camp sites to get a lay of the land the next time we make an attempt to go camping. When we arrived at Jackson, we found a shaded spot under some pine trees along the water falls of Ellis River. Here we cracked open a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon and enjoyed Rosemary Crackers and Brie Cheese.
On our way back to Boston, we discovered a wonderful scenic overlook nearing Conway. It is called Cathedral Ridge (?) and it provided an amazing view of the White Mountain Valley. After a long/pleasant drive back to Massachusetts, Stephanie dropped Lulu at her parents (who cooked up some yummy pork chops for us); Howie with Yavuz (I have to go to Philadelphia Mon-Tues); and me in the North End. For an overnight trip that was supposed to be at a campsite, I am happy that we were able to strike out and ultimately explore more of New Hampshire. What a fun and spontaneous trip!
