Yesterday I celebrated Thanksgiving with Stephanie and her family. We drove up to Andover in the early afternoon to rendezvous with her parents (Helen & Joe). They greeted me with a wonderful birthday present that included 2 bottle’s of Sterling Vinter’s Collection Reds (1 Cab & 1 Merlot), some yummy soup and wine crackers.
The four of us then made our way over to Bob (Helen’s brother) and Eileen’s house for Thanksgiving day dinner. Unfortunately, when we arrived we discovered poor Eileen was under the weather (although she rallied near the end of our stay after consuming some magical saltine crackers). This was the third Thanksgiving I was fortunate to spend with them as Bob makes probably one of the tastiest Turkeys ever. Not sure of everything he does to prepare the bird, but I do remember him telling me that he:
- Soaks the turkey for 12 hours in 3 gallons of water where he mixes in salt and brown sugar
- He then rubs the entire bird with soft butter
- While the turkey is cooking he bastes it with some delicious mixture, which also includes a ton of butter
As you can guess, it comes out very tasty!
The highlight of the evening was when Bob’s son Robby and his family stopped by to say their hellos. Steph and I were also lucky enough to leave Bobby’s with some of his famous turkey as leftovers for ourselves and the kids (Howie & Lulu). All-in-all, a Norman Rockwell-esque Thanksgiving (with snow on the gorund to boot).
