Bulldog Muscles Its Way into AKC’s List of Top 10 Most Popular Dogs

After 75 years, the bulldog makes it way back into the American Kennel Club’s Top 10 List, pushing out the Miniature Schnauzer (how that breed ever bested the English Bulldog is beyond me!?!?!).

The Bulldog was first recognized by the AKC in 1886 – just two years
after the organization’s founding – and was most popular in 1915 when
it peaked in 5th place.  The breed’s popularity ebbed and flowed
throughout the mid-20th century, but since hitting a low of 41st place
in 1973, its ranking has steadily increased.

Some additional info regarding the breeds ranking in major U.S. Cities:

  • The Bulldog is Boston’s 6th most popular dog (Howie and I are a lil pissed about this).
  • The Bulldog is most popular in Los Angeles where is it currently ranked 2nd  right after the Lab. (I’m moving to LA).
  • Despite having one of the world’s most beloved and renowned Bulldogs as
the mascot for its state college sports team – University of Georgia’s
“Uga,” – Atlanta is one of the few cities in the nation that did not
include the Bulldog in its Top 10.  (LAME LAME LAME LAME)
  • San Francisco and Los Angeles were the only cities in the nation to
include the French Bulldog in their Top 10 lists. (VERY COOL!)
